When it was time for me to find my first fur baby of my own. With my background in many rescue organizations of course I was ready to adopt not shop. I visited a few shelters and as precious as they all were, I felt like I just wasn't finished looking.
After a few weeks, a friend showed me just a simple picture of this scared girl; balled up in the middle of the floor of a bare bones shelter floor, with the saddest look I had ever seen. Turns out, this sweet, sensitive little girl was a feral dog living on the beaches of Puerto Rico where it was clear she had no pack let alone family. She was adopted and returned a dozens of times; the reasoning was she was too scared and difficult to train. I went to see her the next day. After one look I knew we found each other. I adopted Piper from the Humane Society of AC that weekend.
Our beginning was very rocky. She was petrified of her own shadow let alone the sight of a human. She hid between the couch and the wall for days only jotting out to do her business when no one was looking. It was clear the mental and emotional scars far outweighed the physical ones. would hide and try to run every chance she could. After almost a year of unrequited outward care and love and of course tons of patience, trial and error and a rigid schedule, I got her to relax and open up! Piper went from the girl who would hide and shake at the sight of her own shadow; to my confident, curious and lovable angel we all know today.
This was all back in August of 2016. After 7 years she remains my biggest and most special success story as of yet and has forever earned her spot as the first "Happie Dog" !
Piper taught me a lesson that became my company's motto:
You can almost see the smile on her face now!
Thank you Piper
